Top Three Comic Book Gamblers

written by Nathan Warby

The suave sophistication of the casino isn’t just limited to the smooth talking, Martini drinking secret agents. Some of our favourite heroes have also been known to grace the tables, whether it be for an action set-piece or just in their valuable downtime. Although, it doesn’t always go smoothly, it does provide us with some memorable moments. How today’s popularity of online casinos is growing, and you can easily place a bet on line you may not have more opportunities to see physical casino scenes with their superhero gamblers in future movies. So here’s our picks for the top three superhero gamblers.

Tony Stark/Iron-Man

When you think back to the movie that kicked off the biggest film franchise on the planet, the classic “I am Iron-Man” line probably jumps at you. You likely don’t think of the time that Tony Stark was due to pick up Apogee Award at Caesars Palace, but instead chose to gamble his considerable fortune away on the games tables – even later giving his award to an entertainer dressed as Roman. This isn’t the only occasion that Tony has been spotted in the casino’s, throughout the comics he has been spotted partying the night away in Vegas; innkeeping with his playboy lifestyle. Unfortunately, it’s usually at the expense of his other responsibilities; maybe he should take up online casino - it’s much more responsible.

Remy LeBeau/Gambit

In many ways, Gambit’s utilisation of gambling is the most natural representation in comics. He displays it perhaps as it should be – a game that’s fun. That being said, he’s not exactly the poster-boy for the morally upstanding X-Men, he is certainly more of anti-hero than a squeaky-clean hero. He’s a suave ladies-man; and his obsession for playing cards, both in playing or throwing super-powered aces at despicable crime-lords, further compounds his smooth-talking persona. His affinity for the cards isn’t just a hobby either; he’s got the skills to back it up, easily cleaning up in casinos across the country – why? Because he can.

Harvey Dent/Two-Face

A slightly darker entry here. One of Batman’s most famous villains was instrumental in making gambling within comic-books a popular story amongst readers. Dent isn’t just a one-dimensional criminal with a betting habit; Two-Face is a complex character with deep flaws and demons which makes him compelling and relatable. Although the concept of gambling is an integral part of his character, so much so that he leaves all of his major life decisions to the toss of coin, but it isn’t the defining element of his personality. If you dig a little deeper into his more detailed storylines, you’ll find that it is just one factor in the psyche of a deranged and troubled character. It’s well worth checking out.
