Ronan. Loki. Ultron. Up to this point, only Thanos has loomed behind the scenes as the most powerful villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Doctor Strange arriving in theaters in just two weeks, that’s all about to change.
Potential spoilers for Doctor Strange and the future of the MCU.
Marvel’s may have tipped their hand that they are including Dormammu in Doctor Strange. The trailers have shown Mads Mikkelsen (Le Chiffre from Casino Royale) in the role of the villain, Kaecilius, for this film. Fans of the comics have been expecting that Dormammu would follow close behind in Doctor Strange, and here’s why...

Who is Dormammu?
Dormammu is one of the most powerful beings in Marvel’s comic universe. He is of equal or greater power than Odin. He has fought Galactus to a stalemate. He’s also Doctor Strange’s arch nemesis.
Dormammu is a power hungry entity who already rules his own dimension, The Dark Dimension, but wants to take over our dimension as well. He’s arguably the strongest villain in the entire Marvel Comics Universe, significantly stronger than Thanos. Why would Doctor Strange’s main villain be a minor henchman like Kaecilius?
How Can We Know This For Certain?
In the comics, Dormammu has a disciple, a dark sorceror by the name of Baron Mordo. Mordo strikes a deal with Dormammu after realizing that Stephen Strange was going to become the Sorcerer Supreme. In exchange for power to destroy Doctor Strange, Mordo agreed to help Dormammu enter our dimension. The set up for Dormammu to appear in Doctor Strange was telegraphed a while back with the confirmation that Chiwetel Ejiofor would be playing Baron Mordo in the next MCU film. Marvel has never changed a villain in the comics to being a hero in the movies. Having Mordo in the film opens the door for the MCU to include Dormammu as well.
What does this mean for the future of the MCU?
If Dormammu is included in Doctor Strange, this shifts the balance of power in the MCU. Thanos on his own, without the Infinity Gauntlet, would never be a match for The Avengers. With the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos would become the most powerful entity in our dimension. If Dormammu is introduced in Doctor Strange, we will have a second powerful entity with plans to conquer our dimension. Thanos may have competition. Thanos may have to contend with Dormammu and other evil forces in a battle for ultimate power in the MCU. Could this be the beginning of a big setup for Avengers 4? Is this why they changed the name from Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2? Will Avengers 4 become some sort of a three way battle for survival between Thanos, Dormammu, and whomever survives the Infinity War?

Tell us in the comments what you think. Will Dormammu make an appearance? What impact will that have in the Infinity Wars? Let's speculate.
